Originally from Chicago, I earned my AMS Early Childhood teaching credential in 1997 from MECA (Montessori Education Centers Associated) in Hinsdale, IL. I also have specialized training in reading assessment and instruction and have a passion for early literacy development. For the past 6 years I have been working with the Creating Compassionate Cultures program and curriculum, an integrated approach to help ignite the wish in the hearts of children to be kind and wise. Implementing lessons and strategies in the classroom for awakening compassion, wisdom and social responsibility in the minds and hearts of children, with an emphasis on the idea of mindfulness, and providing a guide to empowering children to make a positive difference in the world.
Cathy’s teaching experience is varied and has been a rich part of her life since she graduated from high school. She was the lead teacher and assistant director in a Montessori school in Boulder, Colorado for seven years. While she taught there, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English. After briefly teaching high school English, she dedicated several years to homeschooling her three children through their early elementary years, developing a passion for inquiry-based learning. In 2010, Cathy earned her MAT from SOU after teaching 10 years at Willow Wind and Walker Elementary schools in Ashland, Oregon. She has spent the last six years as the lead teacher in a Montessori school. She is currently teaching courses in Education for SOU, putting her in the interesting position of simultaneously teaching both preschoolers and grown-ups!
Cathy’s interests include alternative education, multicultural curriculum, children’s literature, social emotional learning, and family-community relationships. She values interest-led learning in a child-centered environment and weaves the value of respecting our environment and all of its creatures throughout her curriculum.
